Access
To access the Grand Veymont, simply head towards the ski resort of Gresse-en-Vercors. Coming from Grenoble, turn right at Monestier-de-Clermont on the D.8 road, then continue on D.8a. You will quickly arrive at the parking area and the starting point for this memorable hike. You’ll see, it’s like a stroll through the market… without the sausages, but with plenty of breathtaking views!
Details on the difficulty
Although the ascent of the Grand Veymont is stunning, don’t be fooled by its beauty. The climb features a elevation gain of 1096 m and the hike through the Pas de la Ville requires good physical condition. About 2 hours of effort will separate you from the crossroads of trails beneath the pass. Be sure to wear good shoes to avoid “dancing” on the rocks!
Regulations
Before putting on your finest hiking socks, don’t forget to familiarize yourself with the current regulations. The trails are shared, so please respect other hikers, cyclists, and possibly a few sheep that might be around. For wildlife enthusiasts, keep your distance and admire the animals without disturbing them. No selfies with the chamois, okay?
Essential information
For an optimal experience, equip yourself with your IGN map, some cereal bars, water, and a good dose of good humor. My advice? Avoid setting off too late in the afternoon, lest you miss the most Instagrammable sunset of your life. As a bonus, you’ll have a chance to spot the village of Gresse-en-Vercors from above, it’s like a little surprise bonus!
Itinerary
The hike starts at the cable car parking lot, at an altitude of 1245 m. The first part of the ascent is relatively gentle, stretching over 5 km. Once you approach the steeper section towards the Pas de la Ville, prepare to give your legs a bit of a workout! The view expands with every step and tangible gems of landscapes appear. Stay alert for the marking signs and don’t be lazy with your map!
Around
At the end of your ascent, you will be rewarded with a 360° view. The Grand Veymont is the highest peak in the massif, and the beauty of the place can only leave you speechless! Consider exploring the surrounding trails; the Vercors has more than one trick up its sleeve with lovely walks nearby, like an excursion to the gorges de la Bourne to vary the pleasures. And if you have the time, pitch your tent one evening to enjoy a starry night, not forgetting the tartiflette!
