Access
To reach the starting point of this exciting hike, head to Vaunavès, this charming hamlet perched in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. From Digne-les-Bains, expect a little half-hour drive, with a few tight turns to test your sense of direction. Once there, park your vehicle at the little cemetery in Vaunavès, an ideal spot to mark the beginning of the adventure. Don’t forget to give a little wave to the mountains, they are already eyeing your next feat!
Details on Difficulty
The ascent to the summit of Vaumuse is accessible to everyone, even those who prefer the speed of a snail to that of a hare. This 17-kilometer route with an elevation gain of 810 meters will be done without fear of being difficult, as its cheerful nature presents few technical challenges. Basically, you don’t need to be a Yeti to enjoy this breathtaking landscape. Just prepare for a few gentle climbs and a good dose of happiness at the top!
Essential Information
Before putting on your hiking boots, here are a few essential details: the expected time to reach the summit is about 4h30, so plan to bring some nourishment for your good old body at this altitude of 1435 meters. Don’t forget your camera either, as the panoramas will invite you to take selfies, even if the clouds refuse to show up! Remember to check the weather forecasts, as even mountains have their little moods.
Itinerary
To start your journey, once at the little cemetery, follow the yellow markings towards “Les Colombiers” and cross the bridge. Turn right, take the little road that winds to the right. As you ascend, you will pass by lavender fields, with scents that may just make you want to dance the tango (or something less ridiculous). Then, head towards the ridge of Vaumuse, where you will discover an unobstructed view of the Pre-Alps, the Durance, and… maybe even the villagers lounging below! In summary, follow the path, enjoy each moment, and make sure to keep your eyes open to catch sight of the Saint Joseph chapel that will almost indicate your arrival, much like a lighthouse for a ship in a calm sea.
So, lace up your boots, take your courage in both hands, and set off to conquer the summit of Vaumuse. May the hike begin!
