Sisteron pilgrimage : reconnecting with the roots of its fame
Sisteron’s renown originates from its pilgrimage, a millennial sanctuary. Since the medieval 12th century, people from all over have come to venerate the Black Madonna in the Chapel of Notre-Dame du Château. Many miracles have been attributed to Our Lady of Sisteron, prayed to beneath the rock. Right after Jerusalem, Rome, and Santiago de Compostela, Sisteron was one of the most important pilgrimages (GR®653D) of the Middle Ages. Kings, celebrities, and millions of anonymous pilgrims have worn down the steep steps of the access path over the centuries, ascending on their knees to enter the Sanctuary.
This is the heart of Sisteron, which many pilgrims still keep beating today.
